The types of love that we feel are almost as varied as the people who experience it, as is the art that explores the subject. From Greek mythology to Hindu motifs, cultures around the world have used a range of symbols to represent love in art. We look at a few in these art projects, creating hearts, hugs, embraces, kisses and dances inspired by real artists past and present.
In this box we look at how artists have depicted the heart shape in their work – first, at Jim Dine with his colourful renditions, and then at Keith Haring with his energetic dancing-heart drawings!
We will be inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s famous abstract stone sculpture of a kiss, as well as by Andy Warhol and his colourful lip prints. We look at Pierre-Auguste Renoir and how he expresses the joy between couples as they dance; and at Kerry James Marshall who succeeds so beautifully in his painting ‘Slow Dance’ at creating the sense of a very special moment between two people.
